A family birthday gave us a reason to celebrate this weekend, and Michigan supplied a beautiful backdrop. We caught a morning double rainbow, walked along the Clinton River in Utica, and spotted the first fall colors of the season. Back home, we finished with Mrs. Mitten Mornings’ favorite dinner—a meal that has been part of our story since the very beginning.
Soccer and a little room to rest
Our daughter had another fun soccer match this weekend. We love having these chances to watch her play and spend time with her team. But we also had to adjust the weekend’s plans: a cough sounded as though she might be coming down with something, so we skipped swim class to give her time to rest.
It is a familiar part of family life—making plans, then making room for what your child needs. Swim class could wait.
A birthday morning under two rainbows

The birthday celebration began with a double rainbow. Seeing the brighter arc with a second, softer one beside it made the morning feel special before we had gone anywhere. It was the kind of sight that makes you stop what you are doing and look up together.
We carried that feeling into our hike along the Clinton River in Utica. There was still plenty of green overhead, but the first touches of red, orange, and yellow were beginning to appear. We enjoyed finding those early signs of fall along the way.

This is one of our favorite things about spending time outdoors in Michigan: a familiar place changes a little each time you return. You do not have to wait for every tree to turn to enjoy the season. Sometimes a bright patch of leaves is enough to make you pause.
Small discoveries along the river

Along the water, we spotted ducks lined up on fallen logs. Those small discoveries are part of what makes a family walk memorable. The river offered plenty to look at, and the changing leaves added a little more color to the view.
Our daughter also posed at Utica’s wing mural, lifting her arms against the painted wings. It was a playful stop during the outing and another photo to remember the day by.
We stopped for lunch at Mr. Miguel’s in Utica, taking a break from walking to sit together. Our photos caught chips and salsa on the table and a sweet moment between mother and daughter. Between the river, the little stops along the way, and lunch, we had plenty of time simply to enjoy being together.
The dinner that started a tradition

We wrapped up the weekend with Mrs. Mitten Mornings’ favorite dinner: mozzarella-stuffed roasted red peppers with angel hair pasta and a roasted garlic white wine broth.
It was the very first thing I ever cooked for her. Making it again brings that part of our story back to the table. A favorite meal can hold onto a memory in a way that is hard to explain until you start preparing it again.
The recipe printout came back out, the peppers went into the oven, and we gathered what we needed for dinner. After a weekend of soccer, a change of plans, and a birthday outing, returning to this meal felt like a fitting way to close.
The recipe is Emeril’s. You can find the original stuffed roasted red peppers recipe on Emeril’s website.
At Mitten Mornings, these are the stories we love sharing alongside our coffee: a walk close to home, a child discovering something along the way, and a dinner worth making again. We are heading into fall grateful for another weekend together—and for the recipes that stay with us.
Does your family have a meal that takes you back to a particular moment? We would love to hear the story behind it.
